Around the World Camp: Italy

First stop on our Around the World Camp is Italy.

For Italy, we talked about the basics...geography, language, demonyms, flag, famous places, people, things, etc.  For our cultural "deep dive" we discussed pasta shapes and translated then from Italian to English (farfalle = butterfly, orecchiette = little ears, etc.)

Now, for the fun part, our project.  We made Carnivale/Mardi Gras masks.  This was a super-easy project, and a good project to use to ease students in.  I used this basic mask template (I'd link, but I can't remember where I found it):

I copied these on to cardstock paper (our office copy machine was running out of ink so some templates ended up with "ghost copies" on them, but these were easily colored over).  Armed with colors, markers, and glitter, students could design their own masks and then cut out (they needed a little help with the eyes).  A pair of disposable chopsticks made the mask handles and students were ready for Carnivale!
